Endocrine
Thyroidectomy for Hyperthyroidism
What is a
Hyperthyroidism
The production of too much thyroxine hormone, which increases metabolism. Symptoms include unexpected weight loss, rapid heartbeat, sweating, and irritability.
About this procedure
Surgery (Total Thyroidectomy) is recommended when medication or radioactive iodine is unsuccessful or contraindicated. It involves the complete removal of the thyroid gland to stop hormone overproduction.
Recovery timeline
Initial recovery takes 1–2 weeks. Once the gland is removed, a daily hormone replacement tablet is required, which we will help manage in coordination with your GP.
