Dr Michael Swinden

MB BS, BBiomedSc, FRACS

Michael is an Australian-trained general surgeon with a particular expertise in  breast cancer diagnosis / management and oncoplastic breast surgery — an approach that combines cancer treatment with techniques that preserve or restore the natural appearance of the breast.

He graduated from Griffith University in 2008 and completed his surgical training at St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne, one of Australia's leading teaching hospitals. He then undertook an additional fellowship through BreastSurgANZ (Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand), further specialising in oncoplastic breast techniques. Michael relocated to Christchurch in 2023 and holds roles as a Consultant Surgeon at Christchurch Hospital, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Otago Medical School, and works with Canterbury Breastcare.

Michael's approach is calm, thorough, and patient-first. He takes the time to explain what's going on in plain language, walks you through every option, and makes sure you feel genuinely comfortable before any decisions are made. He believes great surgical care isn't just about what happens in the operating theatre — it's about how you feel throughout the entire journey.

When he's not working, Michael prefers to be somewhere on a trail. He's a passionate tramper who has made it his mission to tick off New Zealand's best walks and hikes — a goal that's become considerably easier since swapping Melbourne for Canterbury. He's a devoted dad to a young family, and remains a loyal (some would say long-suffering) Essendon Bombers supporter.
