Dr Megan Thomas

MBChB FRACS
Hernias

Canterbury born, raised, and trained general surgeon with specialist expertise in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery — covering liver, pancreas, and biliary conditions — alongside laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hernia repair, and a broad range of gastrointestinal procedures.

After completing her general surgical training in New Zealand, she undertook further subspecialty training in transplant surgery (renal and liver) in Auckland, followed by international placements in the UK — pancreas surgery at St James's University Hospital in Leeds, and hepatobiliary surgery and surgical oncology (with a focus on sarcoma and neuroendocrine tumours) in Liverpool. She has also worked across New Zealand in Wellington, Nelson, and Palmerston North, but ultimately chose to settle in Christchurch — to be close to family, to return to her roots, and to look after the Canterbury community that raised her. She practices at Christchurch Hospital, Southern Cross Christchurch Hospital, and St George's Hospital.

Ask Megan what she brings to her patients, and the answer is direct: kindness and compassion, with the expertise to match. She believes great surgical care isn't a trade-off between technical excellence and genuine human warmth — it's both, every time. You'll always be treated as a person first, with the time and space to ask questions, understand your options, and feel confident in the path forward.

Outside the operating theatre, Megan can usually be found on a trail somewhere around Canterbury, with her teenage spaniel in tow. She's a keen runner and hiker, and an enthusiastic explorer of Christchurch's ever-growing food scene — always on the hunt for the next great spot in town.
