Dr James McKay
MBChB, MSc, FRACS, FCICM
James is a Christchurch-born and New Zealand-trained general surgeon with a particular expertise in hernia repair — from straightforward inguinal hernias to complex abdominal wall reconstruction. He's also an endoscopist, a trauma surgeon, and a Fellow of the College of Intensive Care Medicine.
He graduated from the University of Otago in 2007 and completed specialist training in both general surgery and intensive care medicine, with additional trauma surgery training in Canada. James works across a broad range of general surgical procedures using minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic techniques, and holds roles as a Consultant Surgeon and Trauma Surgeon at Christchurch Hospital. He also works at Southern Endoscopy Centre and is match day doctor for the Crusaders and New Zealand Rugby — so if something goes wrong on the field, he's the one running on.
James believes that being part of someone's health journey is a privilege. He takes the time to get to know every patient, tailoring his approach to their circumstances and making sure they understand what's happening every step of the way. No jargon. No rushing. Just honest, personalised care from someone who genuinely gives a damn.
Outside the hospital, James is a self-described amateur home mechanic and pretend farmer — both roles he takes very seriously, with varying degrees of success. He's a keen skier, a devoted sports watcher (rugby above all else), and can usually be found on the sideline at his kids' games, living vicariously through their sporting careers. He used to play golf. He doesn't talk about that anymore.
