The production of too much thyroxine hormone, which increases metabolism. Symptoms include unexpected weight loss, rapid heartbeat, sweating, and irritability.

Most often caused by overactivity in the four tiny parathyroid glands in the neck or occasionally from cancer. Extra calcium in the blood affects multiple bodily systems, leading to fatigue, kidney stones, or bone pain.

Goitre (enlargement of the thyroid gland without an increase in thyroid hormone levels) is treated with surgery when it causes obstructive symptoms (difficulty swallowing/breathing) and/or cosmetic concerns.
