Goitre Surgery (Thyroidectomy)
What is a
Goitre
Goitre (enlargement of the thyroid gland without an increase in thyroid hormone levels) is treated with surgery when it causes obstructive symptoms (difficulty swallowing/breathing) and/or cosmetic concerns.
About this procedure
Depending on the size, a partial or total thyroidectomy is performed via a small incision in the neck to remove the enlarged gland while preserving surrounding nerves and parathyroid glands.
Recovery timeline
Most patients return home within 24–48 hours. Light activities can resume in 1 week, with a full return to normal activity usually within 2–3 weeks.
