Open Hernia Surgical Repair
What is a
Open Hernia Repair
In some instances, based on the complexity of the hernia or the patient’s medical history, a traditional open repair may be required rather than a laparoscopic approach.
About this procedure
This involves a single, larger incision (typically 8cm – 10cm) in the groin area. The surgeon manually replaces the protruding tissue and repairs the abdominal wall, often using mesh for reinforcement similar to the laparoscopic method.
Recovery timeline
Because of the larger incision, recovery times are longer than keyhole surgery. Patients may require a longer hospital stay and a more gradual return to physical activity over several weeks.
