Laparoscopic Hernia Repair
What is a
Laparoscopic (Keyhole) Hernia Repair
A hernia occurs when internal tissue or an organ pushes through a weak spot in the muscle wall. This procedure is the least invasive surgical repair option, designed to reinforce the muscle wall and prevent recurrence. We specialise in treating all varieties, including bilateral hernias (both sides), which can be repaired simultaneously using the same incisions.
About this procedure
Performed under general anaesthesia, the surgeon makes a small 1.5cm incision below the navel and two smaller 0.5cm incisions below that. A slim camera allows the surgeon to view the area on a screen while using precision instruments to return the hernia to its correct position. A fine, soft polypropylene mesh is then placed over the weak area as a patch. This mesh is highly effective, with a recurrence rate of less than 0.1%, as scar tissue grows into the mesh to permanently strengthen the area.
Recovery timeline
Most patients are able to return home on the day of surgery. Dissolving sutures are used, and while full recovery varies, most patients return to normal activities within a few days to a few weeks.
