Endoscopy
Gastroscopy (Upper GI Endoscopy)
What is a
Gastroscopy
A gastroscopy is a procedure that enables your specialist to see inside your upper gastrointestinal tract—specifically the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Unlike X-rays, which take external photographs, endoscopy allows for direct visualisation of the internal surfaces, providing significantly more detail and diagnostic accuracy.
About this procedure
Under conscious sedation or local anaesthetic throat spray, a thin, flexible tube (endoscope) with a light and camera is gently passed through the mouth. The specialist views the high-definition images on a video monitor to identify inflammation, ulcers, or other abnormalities. Biopsies (small tissue samples) can be taken during the procedure if required.
Recovery timeline
This is a day-stay procedure typically lasting 15–20 minutes. If sedation is used, you will need to rest in the recovery area for approximately one hour and will require someone to drive you home. Most patients return to normal activities the following day.
